1. Generally speaking, the reverse breakdown voltage of common diodes is over 40V, which can reach several hundred volts to over kilovolts. Moreover, the reverse breakdown voltage is not steep in the reverse breakdown section of the volt-ampere characteristic curve, that is, the range of the reverse breakdown voltage is large and the dynamic resistance is relatively large.

For a regulator, when the reverse voltage exceeds its operating voltage Vz (also known as Zener voltage or stable voltage), the reverse current will suddenly increase, while the voltage at both ends of the device will remain basically constant. The corresponding reverse volt-ampere characteristic curve is very steep and the dynamic resistance is very small. Voltage regulator can be used as voltage regulator, voltage reference, over-voltage protection, level converter, etc.
